Jeweled Butterfly Egg
   

NOTE: This tutorial was written for Photoshop 7. It will work in later versions as well.

FOR THIS TUTORIAL YOU WILL NEED TO DOWNLOAD A ZIP FILE WHICH INCLUDES THE GOLD OUTLINE PRESET AND EGG AND BUTTERFLY BLANKS IN .PSD FORMAT. CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE FILE.

YOU WILL ALSO NEED THE FOLLOWING PRESETS:
ks_gemstones (download them HERE)
ks_pave pink quartz (download it HERE)

1. Open the file named "egg.psd". Control+left mouse button to select the egg, and apply ks_pave pink quartz to it, changing the height to zero and the texture bitmap slider to 50. Your egg should now look like this:

2. Go to Distort, Spherize and type 50 into the box labeled "amount". Click Okay. Go to Sharpen, Sharpen Edges. Go to Image, Adjustments, Brightness/Contrast, and type 15 into the Brightness box and 20 into the Contrast box. Click Okay. Go to Select, Deselect. Your egg should look like this:

3. Open the file named "butterfly.psd". Go to Image, Image Size, and use the following settings:

4. Go to Select, All, and then go to Edit, Copy. Click on the title bar of your egg.psd file to make it active and go to Edit, Paste to paste the butterfly on top of the egg. Name this layer "butterfly". Go to Edit, Transform, Rotate, and rotate the egg until it looks like this:

5. Click on the "egg" layer to make it active, and Control+left mouse click to select the egg. Click on the "butterfly" layer to make it active, and go to Select, Inverse. Hit the Delete button on your keyboard to delete all the sections of the butterfly that lie outside the egg. Go to Select, All, and Image, Crop. Go to Select, Deselect. Go to Image, Adjustments, Invert. Control+left mouse click on the butterfly layer to select the butterfly outline, and apply the ks_gold outline preset to it. Go to Select, Deselect. Go to Layer, Layer Style, Bevel and Emboss and use the following settings:

Click Okay. Your image should look like this:

6. With the "butterfly" layer active, use the magic wand to select the largest opening on the butterfly's body. Create a new layer below the butterfly and name it "gems". With the "gems" layer active, use the bucket tool to flood-fill the selection with white. Apply any of the ks_gemstones preset to the selection. Repeat this process with each opening on the butterfly outline until you have filled them all with differenct colored gemstone presets. Use View, Zoom In when selecting the smaller openings. For the openings that go off the edge of the egg, use the polygonal lasso tool and follow the edge of each opening until you reach the edge of the egg, then follow the edge of the egg to complete your selection. Make sure to completely fill each opening with white before applying a preset. When you are done filling all the openings, go to Layer, Merge Visible. Go to Layer, Layer Style and use the following settings:

Add a layer below the merged egg and flood-fill with white or another background color. Add a drop shadow if you like.
